Lifeguard Prerequisite Information
Students get two chances to complete each prerequisite.
Important: All American Red Cross Instructors must be very strict with upholding the prerequisites. If you fail a prerequisite, you will not be allowed to continue in the class. Please note, I only refund half the cost of the course if you fail the prerequisite. If paid with a check - the check will be deposited and a 50% refund will be mailed. All who fail are not permitted to stay on site and must be picked up by a designated parent or guardian. If your child is a weak swimmer, can’t put their face in the water, doesn’t understand basic stroke mechanics, can’t correctly tread water for 2 minutes, or needs to take breaks while swimming due to a lack of endurance - this class isn’t for them.

Lifeguard Certification & Recertification:

Prerequisite 1: Age

  • Must be at least 15 years old on or before the last day of class. (Proof of age is required).

Prerequisite 2: Swim Test

  • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 6 laps / 150 yards continuously without stopping using only front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Note: This is not a race - take your time). After finishing your 6 laps - start treading water for 2 minutes using only your legs. After 2 minutes (the instructor will tell you when you're finished), swim your last 2 continuous laps (50 yards) using only front crawl or breaststroke or a combination of both.

    • Notes: Goggles are Allowed, No Swimming on Back, should have basic stroke mechanics.

Prerequisite 3: Brick Test

  • The instructor will place a 10 pound brick in the deep end of the pool about 7 or 8 feet underwater. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (less than 1 lap) to the submerged brick. Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to retrieve the brick. Return to the surface, lay on your back, and place the brick on your chest with both hands holding onto the sides of the brick. Swim / kick on your back to the starting point without letting go of the brick. Once back at the starting point, leave the brick at the side of the pool. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Timer stops.
