Waterfront Module

About the Class
  • Prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in non-surf, open-water areas found at public parks, resorts, summer camps, and campground.
     

  • Must have a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding OR be currently enrolled in a Lifeguard Certification Class. (Shallow Water Lifeguards CAN NOT take this class)

    • Valid for: 2 Years​

    • Renew by attending a Waterfront Skill Recert Class​

Course Prerequisites
​Prerequisite 1: Swim Test
  • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 14 laps / 350 yards continuously without stopping using only front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Note: This is not a race - take your time). After finishing your 14 laps - start treading water for 2 minutes using only your legs. After 2 minutes (the instructor will tell you when you're finished), swim your last 8 continuous laps (200 yards) using only front crawl or breaststroke or a combination of both. 

  • Notes: Goggles are Allowed, No Swimming on Back, should have basic stroke mechanics, students get 2 chances.

Prerequisite 2: Brick Test 

  • The instructor will place a 10 pound brick in the deep end of the pool about 7 or 8 feet underwater. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (less than 1 lap) to the submerged brick. Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to retrieve the brick. Return to the surface, lay on your back, and place the brick on your chest with both hands holding onto the sides of the brick. Swim / kick on your back to the starting point without letting go of the brick. Once back at the starting point, leave the brick at the side of the pool. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Timer stops.
    *Must complete within 1 minute, 40 seconds*

    • Notes: No Goggles Allowed, students get 2 chances.​

 

Prerequisite 3: Underwater Swim

  • Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 - 7 feet of water.

  • Resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards.
